THE PUBLIC AI INFRASTRUCTURE IN SPANISH AND CO-OFFICIAL LANGUAGES

ALIA is a pioneering initiative in the European Union that seeks to provide a public infrastructure of AI resources, such as open and transparent language models, to boost the promotion of Spanish and co-official languages - Catalan and Valencian, Basque and Galician - in the development and deployment of AI in the world.

hero

The aim is to facilitate the creation of a new generation of innovative technological resources and services enriched by the immense linguistic heritage of Spanish, spoken by 600 million people in the world, and the co-official languages.

This is the first European public infrastructure, open and multilingual, which, thanks to the unique supercomputing capabilities of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, reinforces the technological sovereignty of Spain and Europe in the development of transparent, responsible AI at the service of people.

This project is coordinated by the Barcelona Supercomputing Center-Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS), with the support and leadership of the Secretary of State for Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence. It is also part of the Artificial Intelligence Strategy 2024 initiated by the Spanish Government

THIS IS  THE FIRST EUROPEAN PUBLIC INFRASTRUCTURE  WHICH, THANKS TO THE UNIQUE SUPERCOMPUTING CAPABILITIES OF THE BARCELONA SUPERCOMPUTING CENTER, REINFORCES THE TECHNOLOGICAL SOVEREIGNTY OF SPAIN AND EUROPE IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF TRANSPARENT, RESPONSIBLE AI AT THE SERVICE OF PEOPLE.

WHY PUBLIC AND OPEN?

ALIA IS  100% PUBLICLY FUNDED  TO PROVIDE ADVANCED RESOURCES TO PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION, UNIVERSITIES, AND COMPANIES, GUARANTEEING  UNIVERSAL ACCESS  FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE ENTIRE SOCIETY.

This is an open project that is distinguished by its transparency, in line with the European AI Act and openness to promote innovation and the adoption of technologies, guaranteeing technological reliability and social and economic inclusion.

The ALIA family of models has been verified by the Spanish Agency for the Supervision of Artificial Intelligence (AESIA) and is aligned with the transparency standards established by the European AI Act.

WHO CAN BENEFIT?

ALIA IS AVIABLE TO EVERYONE AND FOR THE BENEFIT OF EVERYONE.

PUBLIC SUPERCOMPUTING TO ADVANCE IA

Training and deploying generative AI requires enormous computational processing capacity. In the case of training the ALIA family of models, processing several billion words requires the use of thousands of hours on MareNostrum 5, one of the most powerful supercomputers in the world, located and managed by the Barcelona Supercomputing Center.

MareNostrum 5 is the fifth generation of the MareNostrum saga, capable of accelerating science and technology at a speed of 314,000 trillion calculations per second. It is funded by the European Union supercomputing consortium, the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU), Spain - through the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities and the Generalitat of Catalonia -, Turkey, and Portugal.

BACKGROUND

THE ALIA PROJECT WAS LAUNCHED WITH THE LANGUAGE TECHNOLOGIES PLAN IN 2019. PROJECTS SUCH AS AINA, PROMOTED BY THE GENERALITAT OF CATALONIA, AND ILENIA, PROMOTED BY THE STATE SECRETARIAT FOR DIGITALISATION AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, HAVE LAID THE FOUNDATIONS FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF THIS PUBLIC AI INFRASTRUCTURE. IN THE NATIONAL ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE STRATEGY 2024, THE LAUNCH OF THE ALIA PROJECT IS ONE OF THE KEY PILLARS FOR THE CREATION OF THIS PUBLIC AI INFRASTRUCTURE IN SPANISH AND CO-OFFICIAL LANGUAGES. IN ADDITION, ALIA IS ALIGNED WITH THE EUROPEAN UNION'S DIGITAL DECADE PROGRAM, WHICH GUIDES EUROPE'S DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION AND TECHNOLOGICAL SOVEREIGNTY.

ALIA KIT

THE SPACE OF LINGUISTIC RESOURCES

ALIA kit is the space that provides access to all resources in Spanish and co-official languages such as language models, multimodal models (text, voice, and image), methodologies, documentation, and training and evaluation data sets.
